Four lessons custom home builders and buyers can learn from Super Bowl 50

Behind the spectacle of the event, the elaborate half time show, and the wildly expensive TV advertising that took place during Super Bowl 50 this past weekend, there are four lessons for custom home builders and buyers that I would like to share.

First, work with your strengths. The Denver Broncos had Payton Manning as their star quarterback. But was their offense their strength? Surprisingly, no, it was not. Their defense was one of the best, if not the best in the NFL this season. When seeking a custom home builder, find one that fits your custom home project, a builder that is strong in the disciplines required to have a successful construction process. If you are building in the high mountains, seek out a custom builder with experience in that terrain. If you are building in central Florida, seek out someone like Focus Homes, who has a team with over 30 years of experience.

Second, use your time wisely. The Broncos kept running down the clock when their offense was on the field to give the opposition less time to respond and make a come back. When you are designing and building a custom home, time is literally money. Seek out a custom builder who has a track record of bringing their projects in on a timely basis, without large time overruns.

Third, execute your plan and work very hard in bite size pieces. Denver kept running the ball, running down the clock in seconds at a time, a little here, a little there. A yard here, a yard there. They never stopped. They have one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history but stuck to their running game plan. A custom home project can seem overwhelming at times – there are so many choices to make! Experts like the Focus Homes team know and understand this, that is why there is a process to the make the whole experience not only manageable but enjoyable. Remember the old saying, “you eat an elephant one bite at a time”. That is so true when your dealing with your own custom home project.

Forth, play your part and play it well. Each member of the Broncos team played a part of the overall plan. They all contributed their own effort, their own part. They didn’t all get the spot light but as a team they achieved more together than they could have done as individuals. A custom Focus Homes project is a team effort. There are so many people involved in a successful custom home build. The buyers play a part making decisions in a timely manner, organizing their construction-perm financing when not paying cash, being available for walk-throughs and the like. The lender, title company, subcontractors, suppliers and of course Focus Homes all play a part and each must play their part well to have an enjoyable experience. It can be done. It is done regularly. When the team plays as a team, great things can happen.
